Meaning of Mobility: )
Mobility stands for shift, change and movement from one position to another.
Meaning of Social Mobility: )
When people or individual occupying a position, move to another social position or status.
Definitions: )
1- Barber :
Social mobility refers to movement, either upward or downward between higher or lower social classes.
2- Sorokim :
Sorokim opinioned that there is no society where social mobility is absent. Social means transition of individuals or groups from one position in social hierarchy to another.
Factors responsible for Social Mobility: )
1- Motivation :
Openness motivates people to work hard and improve upon the skills. So, that one can attain higher social status.
2- Achievements & Failures :
Unexpected performance, attracts the attention of wider public to the abilities of a person. Failures also have a downward mobility.
3- Education :
Education not only helps an individual to acquire knowledge but it is also a passport for occupational for higher prestige.
4- Skills and Training :
Society gives incentives to skilled and trained persons when people complete their training, they are entitled to get high positions.
5- Legislation :
The enactment of new laws can also facilitate social mobility. When Zamindari Abolition Act was passed by parliament most of the tenant cultivators become owner cultivators of land.
Types of Social Mobility: )
1- Horizontal Mobility :
This occurs when a person changes their occupation but their overall social standing remains unchanged. For example - If a Doctor shifts from practicing medicine to teaching in a medical school.
2- Vertical Mobility :
This refers to a change in the occupational, political or religious status of a person that causes a change in their societal position. It can be ascending or descending.
3- Upward Mobility :
This is when a person moves from a lower position in a society to a higher one. Individual will need to adapt to new environment as a result of their upward movement.
4- Downward Movement :
Downward mobility takes place when a person moves from a higher position in society to a lower one. It occurs when someone is caught performing a wrongful act.
5- Inter-generational Mobility :
When the social position changes from one generation to another. For example- A father worked in a factory while his son received education that allowed him to become a Lawyer or Doctor.
6- Intra- generational Mobility :
It refers to a change in position between siblings. It is the change in societal position occurs during the lifespan of a single generation.
